The Early Days
Headley Bell with Nicoma Bloodstock has been working with longtime clients and friends, Tolie and Audie Otto for decades. In 2019, Headley recommended the Otto’s mate their G1 producing mare, Smart Shopping with proven stallion Arrogate. At that time, the commercial market demand led to a reduced fee for Arrogate from $75k to $50k. Headley believed it was premature for this fee reduction as Arrogate himself didn’t run until his 3 year old year. Taking a calculated gamble, Nicoma and Mill Ridge would breed 11 mares to Arrogate in 2020 because of this strong belief in the stallion and reduced fee.
The gamble would pay off as nearly 50% of this offspring are stakes winners.
Arrogate’s pedigree blend suited the Otto’s mare, Smart Shopping, who delivered a healthy foal on April 20, 2021. The young colt had everything you’d want in a foal and yearling: excellent disposition and temperament.
Time to Grow
While not the biggest horse, he had a lovely, athletic walk and way about him. Price and the Mill Ridge Sales team strategized to separate the Arrogate offspring amongst various sales that best showcase the individual horse. In partnership with the Fasig Tipton team, they selected the Saratoga Sale as the perfect stage for SEIZE THE GREY.
Being a late April foal, he was less mature when presented with other yearlings in the crop. The prospective buyers asked smart questions about the horse and his age suited the savvy buying team led by Roderick Watchman who had a similar approach and understood he would need time to develop and mature.
Sold to MyRacehorse at the 2022 Fasig Tipton Saratoga Sale for $300,000.
With over 2,500 owners, SEIZE THE GREY is part of a new trend in Thoroughbred racehorse ownership.
