Boarding & Raising

Our success in raising some of the world’s best racehorses is founded in time-proven traditions balanced with modern techniques.

We take great pride in our boarding service; it’s the foundation of our farm. Our clients are recognized as family, and we are honored every day to take care of their horses.

Putting the horse first has been successful for our clients for decades. The fertile land we sit on supplies the foundation for our horses to thrive, and the results to produce a healthy racehorse are evident.

Since horses are herd animals, they seek comfort and growth in the herd. We believe in ample turnout and are blessed to have some of the best soils and grasses in the region.

Our rolling hills and large open spaces promote bone development and competitiveness amongst our crops. True to our roots, we take care of the horse first and know the rest will take care of itself.

Our devoted farm staff is supported by the best veterinary care in the country, who have partnered with us since our founding.

In addition, our blacksmith team has been with us for over 30 years and is an integral part of ensuring our horse’s hoof and bone development are on course for a sound and full career.

We always welcome the opportunity to grow our family and invite you to the farm anytime to learn more about our boarding program.

Mares and Foals

We board broodmares in-foal and with their foals by their sides, giving them the finest possible care.

Being a thoroughbred racehorse nursery is the heart of what we do at Mill Ridge Farm.

We practice our philosophy of “taking care of the horse, and the horse will take care of you” every day, and it’s most evident in the care of our mares and foals.

Foals stay by their mother’s sides until they are four to six months old, when they are weaned and join others their age in pasture. Together, those weanlings learn to become potential champions.

Yearlings

Colts and fillies that are between one and two years old are considered yearlings.

At this age, thoroughbreds are strong and unpredictable and are separated by gender. They require plenty of turn out and interaction with each other as they begin to realize their strength and abilities.

As we got to know each yearling, we continue to handle them and prepare them for lots of human touch and care.

Yearlings are also at a prime age for sale. Every year, we sell many yearlings at auction to buyers looking to train and develop the next champion.
